ESMT Berlin hosts dialogue forum “Think 20 Summit 2017 – Global Solutions”

ESMT Berlin is hosting the dialogue forum “Think 20 Summit – Global Solutions” on May 29-30, 2017. At the two-day conference, the world’s leading research institutes and think tanks from the G20 countries will gather in Berlin to discuss, evaluate, and adopt recommendations for solving issues of global importance.

Speakers include Peter Altmaier, Head of the German Federal Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Tasks; Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL Group; former ESMT President Lars-Hendrik Röller, Chief Economic Advisor to Chancellor Merkel and G7 and G20 Sherpa; Günther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources;  and Jeffrey Sachs, UN Special Advisor on the Millennium Development Goals. Four Nobel Laureates in Economics are also taking part in the conference: George Akerlof, Professor, Georgetown University; Edmund S. Phelps, Director, Center on Capitalism and Society, Columbia University; Michael Spence, William R. Berkley Professor in Economics and Business, NYU Stern School of Business; and Joseph E. Stiglitz, Professor, Columbia University.

Topics of the T20 are aligned with the G20 program of the German federal government, ranging from Agenda 2030, climate policy, global inequality, and migration to sustainable agriculture, financial resilience, and digital economy, to name just a few. Recommendations discussed at the T20 may be incorporated into the decisions of the G20 summit of heads of state and government on July 7-8 in Hamburg. On May 30, Rajshri Jayaraman, Professor of Economics at ESMT, will moderate a discussion focusing on evidence-based policy design. Participants of the session include Jörg Rocholl, Professor and President of ESMT; Ed Lazear, Professor, Stanford Graduate School of Business; Detlev Ganten, Founding President, World Health Summit; and Christian Dustmann, Professor of Economics, University College London.

Established in 2012, the T20 is a politically independent network of research institutes and think tanks from the G20 countries that organizes a dialogue among their members and the policy community, communicates with the broader public about global issues, and advises the G20 on a scientific basis. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) are chairing the T20 Summit 2017. ESMT is academic partner and Der Tagesspiegel is in charge of conference management.
